Magone Lake
Getting
There: Magone
Lake is a 35 acre natural
lake located approximately
9 air miles northeast of
John Day off of County Road
18, then Forest Road 36. It
is open all year to angling,
but snow often blocks vehicle
access late November until
late March.
Fisheries: The
lake is stocked annually
with fingerling rainbow trout
in spring and brook trout
in fall that grow to legal
size by the following year.
Bag limit is 5 fish per day. Minimize
size for rainbow is 8 inches
with no minimum size on brook
trout. Most successful anglers
use bait suspended just off
the bottom, although fly
anglers do well in spring
and late fall. Rainbow
to 17 inches and brook trout
to 15 inches are caught each
year.
Facilities: The
lake is in a very scenic
setting with a popular US
Forest Service campground
and boat ramp. Fees for camping.
