Fisheries: From Rock Creek downstream, quantities of hatchery steelhead smolts that fail to migrate contribute to a popular trout fishery from late May through October. Wild rainbow trout, bull trout and whitefish are also present. Fin-clipped migrating steelhead are in the river from mid-February into April.

Useful Information: Trout fishing can be very good from mid-June to early July (when the river lowers) through October. Dress for wading to avoid climbing around obstacles (wet wading is usually unbearable until late summer).

Tackle & Techniques: Caddis hatches are abundant and fly fishing is popular. Caddis nymph imitations (such as Prince Nymphs) will catch more fish, but elk hair caddis dry flies can be fun. For bait fishing, use worms in early season, grasshoppers later. Brass spinners can work well. Use single-point barbless hooks to reduce hanging up on the freestone riverbed.

Facilities: Two wayside parking areas with toilets (downstream area is wheelchair accessible); highway pull-outs with easy river access; bank access, picnic tables, tent and RV sites, drinking water, and wheelchair- accessible restroom at Minam State Recreation Area; fishing supplies in La Grande, Wallowa and Enterprise; additional camping at Wallowa Lake State Park.

Fees: Yes, for overnight use at both state parks.

Additional Activities: Wallowa Lake State Park for hiking, boating, nature programs; access to Eagle Cap Wilderness; horseback riding and pack train stables near the state park. Nearby state parks: Wallowa Lake State Park, Minam State Recreation Area.
