2013 Ice Fishing Highlights

Diamond Lake Ice Fishing

Ice Fishing for Trout

Diamond Lake’s new year-round angling regulation went into effect on January 1, 2013, allowing people to try ice fishing. The lake was suitable for ice fishing through mid-April.

Ice fishing proved very popular, and ODFW taught more than 60 people how to ice fish at a clinic in early February. Many anglers were either new to the sport or returning to a type of fishing they enjoyed when they lived elsewhere in the United States. A former Minnesotan who enjoyed ice fishing in his youth caught the first fish of the year.

To estimate harvest, anglers turned in voluntary creel survey forms and biologists surveyed on several weekends. Diamond Lake Resort also counted the peak number of people fishing each day from early February through April.

During prime ice fishing season, about 140 to 180 anglers visited the lake each week. The catch averaged 2.3 trout per angler on weekdays and 1.3 trout per angler on weekends. Most anglers tended to keep their fish, and ODFW estimates a maximum of about 9,500 trout were harvested. The fish averaged 11 inches long with a few 15-inchers also caught.

The year-round regulation was proposed by the public and approved by the Fish and Wildlife Commission during the 2012 angling regulation process.
