Marine Reserves

The Marine Resources Program (MRP) of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is based in Newport with field offices in Astoria, Charleston and Brookings.

Staff are responsible for the monitoring, sampling, research and management of both the commercial and recreational marine fisheries.

MRP's goal is to increase the quality and quantity of stock assessments and biological information collected through improved at-sea and dockside sampling programs and through carefully designed research projects.

The Oregon Nearshore Strategy

The Oregon Nearshore Strategy, adopted by the Oregon Fish & Wildlife Commission in December 2005, is a strategic document that establishes priorities for ODFW's management of nearshore marine resources. The Strategy provides a wealth of information on key nearshore species and habitats, information gaps and needs, and opportunities for public/private conservation actions and partnerships.

Planned work will:

  • Address emerging fishery resources concerns, such as evaluating changes in regulations, developing alternative fishing gears, providing information on stocks with unknown status, developing alternative survey methods, and improving stock assessments.

  • Focus on extending projects to which we are already committed or undertake new short-term projects because funds are of limited duration.

  • Balance work between the nearshore and offshore fisheries and resources.

  • Collaborate with partners including but not limited to Oregon State University, the University of Oregon, the National Marine Fisheries Service, other states agencies, and the fishing community.
