Cottage Grove, Ore. — Be our guest for a day of fishing with the kids.  Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife invites young anglers to take part in the Youth Angling Enhancement Program Saturday, April 14 at Cottage Grove Pond in Cottage Grove, Oregon from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  The event is free and ODFW will even clean the kids’ catch.

Nearly 750 rainbow trout will be stocked on April 14 by Lake's Trout Farm, Inc including 250 fish twelve inches or greater.  ODFW will provide equipment including rods, reels and bait.  Angling Education Instructors will be on hand to answer questions and offer assistance to less experienced youth anglers.

“This is a great opportunity for parents and kids to get introduced to fishing,” says Kelly Reis, Assistant District Fish Biologist in Springfield.  “We’re here to answer any questions the families might have and provide instruction for beginners.”

This program was made possible through a $50,000 appropriation from the Oregon Legislature and a partnership with the Oregon Wildlife Heritage Foundation, which has pledged an additional $50,000 and is working with ODFW to develop and promote youth fishing opportunities throughout the state.

Under Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations, anglers aged 13 and under do not require a license, while those 14-17 require a juvenile license.  All fishing regulations continue to apply for this event.

To get to Cottage Grove Pond, take the Dorena Lake exit from I-5 (Exit 174) and head east on Row River Road approximately 1.5 miles.  The pond is accessed from an asphalt pathway behind the weigh station on the north side of Row River Road.

The mission of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is to protect and enhance Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations. The agency consists of the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission, a commission-appointed director and a statewide staff of approximately 950 permanent employees. Headquartered in Salem, ODFW has regional offices in Clackamas, Roseburg, Bend, and La Grande with ten district offices located throughout the state.
