NEWPORT, Ore. – The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will hold two public meetings, one in Seaside and one in Newport, to discuss the commercial harvest of razor clams south of Tillamook Head.

Two meetings are scheduled to consider the question. The first will be 6 p.m. Monday, April 23, at the Seaside Civic and Convention Center, 415 1st Ave., Seaside. The next meeting will be 6 p.m. Thursday, April 26, Englund Marine Supply, 880 S.E. Bay Blvd., Newport.

The meetings are in response to public concerns over the commercial harvesting of razor clams in the Cannon Beach area. At its February meeting in Seaside, the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission received a copy of a resolution passed by the Cannon Beach City Council asking that commercial razor clam digging not be allowed in Clatsop County south of Tillamook Head.

At the same meeting a Cannon Beach resident presented a petition from a group asking that commercial digging not be allowed on area beaches. The commission directed ODFW staff to conduct a public process and make recommendations for the commission to consider in the future. Following the commission’s direction for a public process, the petition was withdrawn, allowing the commission more time to consider the question.

At the meetings agency personnel will present information regarding the razor clam fishery issues and solicit public feedback. Any proposed regulation changes resulting from the public meetings will be presented to the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission at their July 13 meeting in Lincoln City. The Commission is the agency’s rulemaking body.

The mission of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is to protect and enhance Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations. The agency consists of the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission, a commission-appointed director and a statewide staff of approximately 950 permanent employees. Headquartered in Salem, ODFW has regional offices in Clackamas, Roseburg, Bend, and La Grande with ten district offices located throughout the state.
