SALEM, Ore. – The Cervid Rule Advisory Group will meet May 14 in Bend continue its review of the rules associated with elk ranching in Oregon.

The group is expected to focus on the issues of genetics and disease during the May 14 meeting and may recommend rule revisions to ODFW staff.

The meeting is scheduled from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at Deschutes Service Building, downtown campus, 1300 NW Wall Street. Members of the public are welcome to attend the entire meeting. An opportunity for public comment is scheduled for 3:45 p.m.

The advisory group was formed by the Fish and Wildlife Commission at its February 2007 meeting for the purpose of reviewing elk ranching rules and recommending potential rule revisions to ODFW staff. The 18-member group includes representatives from the elk ranching industry, Oregon Hunters Association, MAD-Elk Coalition, Oregon Wild, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Oregon Department of Agriculture, Oregon Cattlemen’s Association and the Oregon Farm Bureau. 

The group is expected to meet on several more occasions before making recommendations to ODFW staff. Under the rule revision process established by the Fish and Wildlife Commission, ODFW will use the recommendations to propose rule revisions for public consideration. The Commission is scheduled to consider any rule changes in December.
