BEND, Ore — Biologists will use electrofishing equipment on Crooked River below Bowman Dam June 19-23 to conduct surveys on redband trout and mountain whitefish.
Angling opportunities may be temporarily affected. Fish will be stunned, captured in nets, data recorded, marked and returned to the river near the capture location. Past survey efforts indicate mortality associated with this type of sampling is very low. Biologists will check the area each day to recapture marked fish from previous days.
Surveys will take place two miles below the dam. Information collected such as population size, species relative abundance, size distribution and condition will help improve management of this popular fishery.
Sampling is part of ODFW’s ongoing efforts to determine factors influencing the abundance of redband trout and mountain whitefish and identify causes for the trout population decline in 2006.
