La Grande, Ore.—The Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife (ODFW) has scheduled the third annual “Youth Outdoor Day” at Ladd Marsh Wildlife Area on Saturday, June 27. The event, designed for ages 9 – 17, will provide opportunities for kids and their parents to participate in a number of activities focusing on hunting and outdoor safety.
Several local organizations, agencies and businesses have joined together to provide a unique experience where all participants will find something fun and educational. Activities scheduled include beginning archery, firearm safety and handling, shooting sporting clays, boating safety, waterfowl identification and calling techniques, turkey hunting skills, outdoor survival, air rifle and laser shot rifle shooting, hunting dog demonstrations, wildlife management and identification, muzzle loader and “mountain man” activities and more.
Pre-registration is underway and those interested are urged to register by June 24 as spaces are limited to the first 150 participants. The $5 per person registration fee provides use of all the equipment, ammunition and supplies needed and a BBQ lunch. Children (under age 18) must be accompanied by an adult during the entire event. Registrations will be accepted at the event providing spaces are available.
Registration forms are available at ODFW offices throughout eastern Oregon or can be downloaded from ODFW’s website under the Northeast Region list of events. The event will take place at Ladd Marsh Wildlife Area located approximately 5 miles south of La Grande at 59116 Pierce Road. Check-in and late registration for the event begins at 9:00. The event will end at 3:30 PM.
Participating organizations and sponsors include US Forest Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Oregon State Marine Board, Grande Ronde Model Watershed, Eagle Cap Traditional Archers, Ducks Unlimited, National Wild Turkey Federation, La Grande Rifle and Pistol Club, Grande Ronde Muzzleloaders, Safeway and Albertsons.
