ODFW salmon, trout advisory committee seeks three new members

April 15, 2011

SALEM — The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is seeking qualified candidates to represent three districts on the Salmon and Trout Enhancement Program (STEP) Advisory Committee.

Oregonians that are involved with local fishing groups, have previous experience working with volunteers or in community service, and are able to travel at least four times per year are encouraged to apply.

The three open positions on the Committee represent the Mid-Coast, Northeast and Tenmile, Coos and Coquille districts. The ideal candidates will be residents of one of these districts:

  • The Mid-Coast District includes all of the central Coast basins from the Salmon River south to Siltcoos and Tahkenich lakes near Reedsport. This term could begin as early as Aug. 1, 2011.
  • The Northeast District includes the communities of Hermiston, Pendleton, La Grande, Enterprise, Baker City, John Day, Mitchell and Condon. This position is currently vacant and a successful candidate would start as soon as the appointment process is completed
  • The Tenmile, Coos and Coquille STEP District includes Coos County. This term could begin as early as Aug. 1, 2011.

All newly-appointed Committee members will serve four-year terms, with the possibility of re-appointment for a total term of eight years. Interested candidates should apply by June 1, 2011.

STEP was created by the Oregon Legislature in 1981 to provide a way for volunteers to participate in the restoration of native stocks of salmon, steelhead and trout. Since then, thousands of volunteers have assisted Oregon's fisheries through their involvement in STEP, donating money, materials, equipment, and countless hours of time and labor.

The committee is comprised of 13 members appointed by the Governor and representing all regions of Oregon. They meet quarterly in various communities throughout the state to conduct STEP business and advise ODFW and the Fish and Wildlife Commission on issues regarding STEP. Committee members are volunteers; however, business-related expenses are reimbursed.

For more application materials, go to http://governor.oregon.gov/Gov/boards.shtml and follow the link to “interest form. Information on STEP, STAC duties, and the geographic area of each district can be found at http://www.dfw.state.or.us/STEP or by contacting Kevin Herkamp, ODFW Salmon and Trout Enhancement Program Coordinator, at (503)947-6232 or kevin.herkamp@state.or.us.
