Get the whole family ready for bird hunting season at August outdoor skills workshops

SALEM, Ore.—Warm up for bird hunting season by signing up for an ODFW Outdoors shotgun skills clinic Aug. 20 in Cottage Grove or for a family hunting-fishing clinic Aug. 27-28 near Corvallis.

Families can participate in these low-cost workshops. The minimum ages are 11 for the shotgun skills clinic and 9 for the hunting-fishing clinic. Sign up using this online registration form or contact Mark Newell at 503-947-6018 or Darlene Sprecher 503-947-6025 for more information.

A Day at the Range (Family) Workshop, Aug. 20, Cottage Grove Gun Club

This shotgunning workshop is designed for beginners, but all skill levels are welcome. The workshop will teach basic firearm safety and handling, shotgun skills, terminology, shooting techniques and marksmanship. Participants will have the opportunity to shoot sporting clays in a number of patterns under experienced supervision. If you have never had any formal training in fitting a shotgun, mounting a shotgun, or shooting a shotgun, this event is for you.

Cost: $25.00 / adult; $15.00 / youth / student (includes the use of all necessary equipment: shotguns, ammunition, eye protection and ear protection; instruction/materials, and lunch.) Participants must be at least 11 years old.

Family Hunting and Fishing Clinic, Aug. 27-28, Luckiamute Valley Pheasants (near Corvallis)

Bring your family and enjoy two days offly fishing, archery, waterfowl calling, trap shooting and a pheasant hunt on Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning. All participants will receive a safety briefing and practice trap shooting Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon, one group will pheasant hunt with a volunteer hunting guide and hunting dog while the other tries archery, waterfowl calling and fly-fishing; the groups switch for the Sunday morning session. Event co-hosted by Owen Denny Chapter of Pheasants Forever, private game preserve Luckiamute Valley Pheasants.

Cost: $40.00 per adult and $10.00 per child (ages 17 and under). Fee includes lunch both days and all needed equipment.

Other Information: Participants still need valid fishing and hunting license, upland HIP (Harvest information Program), and Upland Game Bird validation. Licenses and tags will not be sold at the event. Participants that do not wish to purchase an Oregon hunting license may purchase a preserve license at the workshop for the hunt portion; you will still need a valid Oregon fishing license for the fishing portion. Youth age 9-13 without hunter safety certification or licenses/tags may hunt under the Mentored Youth Hunting Program if all program directions are followed (one-to-one ratio between youth and supervising adult; one weapon between youth and supervising adult; adult has all valid license and tags; MYHP registration form completed before workshop)..

Primitive camping (no water or electric hookups) will be available on site for free. Lunch is provided on both Saturday and Sunday but all other meals are the responsibility of participants.
