Sturgeon season closes in Bonneville pool

July 7, 2011

CLACKAMAS, Ore. – Sturgeon retention season on the Columbia River between Bonneville Dam and The Dalles Dam will close after Friday, July 8.

The season had previously been scheduled to continue through Saturday, July 9 but was closed a day earlier because the harvest guideline of 2,000 sturgeon has been achieved. The closure was approved today during a joint state hearing of the Oregon and Washington departments of fish and wildlife.

Sturgeon retention seasons remain open on many other areas of the Columbia.

The remaining Columbia sturgeon retention seasons are as follows:

  • Buoy 10 upstream 40 miles to Wauna Powerlines is open to sturgeon retention seven days a week through July 31, or earlier if the harvest guideline of 6,800 fish is achieved. The daily bag limit is one fish with a fork length of 41-54 inches.
  • From the Wauna Powerlines upstream to River Marker 82 at the head of Skamania Island, 14.5 miles below Bonneville Dam, sturgeon retention is open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday through the end of July. This section of the river is also scheduled to reopen in October. The daily bag limit is one fish with a fork length of 38-54 inches.
  • From The Dalles Dam to the John Day Dam, sturgeon retention is open seven days a week until the harvest guideline of 300 sturgeon is achieved. As of July 3, a total of 169 sturgeon had been harvested in this section of the river. The daily bag limit is one fish with a fork length of 43-54 inches.
  • Above McNary Dam sturgeon retention is open seven days a week through July 31. The daily bag limit is one fish with a fork length of 43-54 inches.
  • Catch-and-release fishing for sturgeon is allowed year-round regardless of the status of retention seasons, except in designated spawning sanctuary areas.
