Sage-Grouse meetings in Ontario and Burns

May 13, 2011

SALEM, Ore. – The Vale and Burns Sage-Grouse Conservation Strategy Implementation teams will meet on June 1 and 2, to review and recommend changes to the Core Area maps as defined in the March revision of the updated Greater Sage-Grouse Conservation Assessment and Strategy for Oregon.

The Vale meeting on June 1 will be held at the OSU Extension office, 710 SW 5th Ave, Ontario from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Burns meeting on June 2 will be held at the Harney County Visitor Center, 484 N Broadway, Burns from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The purpose of this meeting is to provide for public involvement in refining boundaries of Core Area Maps. Any recommended changes to the Core Area map will be forwarded to the Oregon Sage Grouse and Sagebrush Habitat Conservation Team for review.

The meeting is open to the public, and there will be a public comment period.

Core Are Maps are used to provide guidance to land use planners, land managers and the public as to the areas of greatest biological importance to the persistence of sage-grouse populations. These areas should be targeted for conservation actions or protections when large-scale disturbances are proposed. Core Area maps also provide a broad-scale filter to assist planners, County, State and Federal agencies to identify areas of likely high and low resource conflicts associated with development proposals.

The Vale and Burns teams represent two of five local teams. There is a team for each Bureau of Land Management District within the current distribution of sage-grouse in Oregon as well as one in the Baker Resource Area in the Vale district. Public meetings will be held in each of the Implementation Team areas.

The draft plan, Greater Sage-Grouse Conservation Assessment and Strategy for Oregon, is available on ODFW’s website.
