Scientists to review ODFW’s Ecological Atlas

September 12, 2011

NEWPORT –Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will conduct a two-day workshop next week to seek scientific input on the department’s Ecological Atlas, a planning tool used in the Territorial Sea Plan process for renewable energy siting.

The meeting will be Sept. 20 and 21 at the Comfort Suites (Salbasgeon Suites), 1730 NW 9th St., Corvallis.

The scientific review will focus on the data and methods used in the Ecological Atlas project that will be part of Oregon’s Territorial Sea Plan. The Atlas maps individual marine resources – like kelp beds, rocky reefs and other ecological information – that will be used to determine potential sites for future ocean development projects.

The Ecological Atlas is a collection of biological, oceanographic, habitat and other data that can be geographically displayed and analyzed to look for ecological hotspots in the territorial sea from shore to three miles out. To view the Google Earth-based maps already incorporated in the Ecological Atlas, see Oregon Marine Map at: http://oregon.marinemap.org/.

The workshop’s intent is to bring together invited scientific experts for specific technical review of data and analysis. However, anyone is welcome to attend and observe the proceedings. There will be a way to provide written public comment at the workshop, but there will be no time for public comment.

No decisions about marine spatial planning or ocean energy development will be made at this workshop. These kinds of decisions will be discussed during a series of Territorial Sea Plan process public meetings along the Oregon coast and in the Willamette Valley in October and November.

For more information on the upcoming public meetings for the Territorial Sea Plan process, as well as, the Ecological Atlas, visit http://www.oregonocean.info/.
