ODFW offers new way to comment on 2012 halibut and bottomfish seasons

September 26, 2011

NEWPORT, Ore. – The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has a new way for anglers to comment on several options for the 2012 sport Pacific halibut and sport bottomfish seasons.

ODFW has set up two web-based survey tools to get angler input on several proposals for the 2012 halibut fisheries and for the 2012 bottomfish season structure related to cabezon harvest and to efforts to reduce impacts to yelloweye rockfish.

To help anglers better understand the proposals before commenting, ODFW also has posted background information on both fisheries. The presentations can be found by going to ODFW’s Marine Resources Program website at http://www.dfw.state.or.us/MRP/ and clicking on the quick link for sport halibut or sport groundfish.

The survey for the 2012 halibut fisheries can be found at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/SFFVJ2Q.

The survey on proposed changes for the 2012 bottomfish fishery can be found at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/S3KP9DJ .

The surveys will be open through Tuesday, Oct. 4.

According to Lynn Mattes, ODFW sport groundfish program leader, the survey tools should make it easier for people who cannot attend a public meeting to participate in the decision-making process.

ODFW will be hosting a series of public meetings in coastal communities to solicit public comment on the same issues.

Dates and locations for the meeting are:
Astoria—Monday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express, 204 West Marine Drive
Newport--Tuesday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express (south of the bridge), 135 SE 32nd.
Brookings—Wednesday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. at the Best Western Beach Front Inn, 16008 Boat Basin Drive.
Coos Bay—Thursday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m. at the Red Lion Hotel, 1313 N Bayshore Drive

Members of the public can also comment by calling or e-mailing Lynn Mattes (Lynn.Mattes@state.or.us) or Patrick Mirick (Patrick.p.mirick@state.or.us) at 541-867-4741 before Sept. 30.
