Mt. Hood Pond family fishing event cancelled

September 28, 2012

CLACKAMAS, Ore. — A family fishing event scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 6 at Mt. Hood Pond has been cancelled in response to water quality issues at the site.

The five-acre pond is located on the campus of Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham.

“Unfortunately, the dissolved oxygen levels in the water are too low to support all of the fish we had intended to release for the family fishing event,” said Jeff Fulop, fish biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s North Willamette Watershed District.

Fulop explained that low dissolved oxygen levels are common in many Willamette Valley ponds during the late summer and early fall, due to elevated temperatures and low water levels. He added that conditions usually improve with the onset of rainfall and cooler temperatures.

If conditions permit, the family fishing event will be rescheduled for later in the fall, according to Fulop.
