SALEM, Ore.—ODFW Outdoors is offering several small game and pheasant hunting workshops in January and February in Monmouth and Maupin.

These workshops are perfect for beginners because ODFW provides all the gear needed including shotguns, shells, eye protection, and hunter orange clothing. Each class begins with a basic hunter safety lesson and practice on the shotgun range. Then participants head into the field for a real hunt, guided by hunting dogs and their handlers. Finally, participants learn how to clean and prepare a bird, and go home with cooking tips and recipes.

ODFW is offering a mix of clinics—some for families, some for adults, and some for women.

Jan. 18 – Family Small Game Hunting, EE Wilson Wildlife Area (Monmouth). $40 adults, $12 for youth. Children age 9-13 may hunt under the Mentored Youth Hunter Program. Children age 14-17 need to be hunter education certified to participate.

Jan. 25 – Adult Introduction to Pheasant Hunting, Sage Canyon Outfitters, Maupin. $52.

Feb. 22 – Family Introduction to Pheasant Hunting, Luckiamute Valley Pheasant Preserve, Monmouth. $52/adults, $12/youth. Children age 9-13 may hunt under the Mentored Youth Hunter Program.

Feb. 23 – Women’s Introduction to Pheasant Hunting, Luckiamute Valley Pheasant Preserve, Monmouth. $52

lunch is included in the clinic price. Participants also need to purchase the appropriate license or tag BEFORE the workshop. These can be purchased online or at a license sales agent.  Adults need a hunting license ($29.50) and an Upland Game Bird Validation ($8.50) if hunting pheasant. Youth need a youth hunting license ($14.50 for youth age 14-17, free if younger) and Upland Game Bird Validation ($8.50) for pheasant. Pheasant hunters also need a free HIP validation.

To register, go to a license sales agent or ODFW office that sells licenses. You can also register online at ODFW’s License Sales page (Click View All Classes/Workshops / Outdoor Skills to see classes). For the family workshops, adults need to choose “Adult Workshop” and Youth “Youth Workshop.”
