Family fishing event July 7 at Lhuuke Illahee hatchery

July 2, 2013

NEWPORT, Ore. – Youths 17 and younger are invited to a free Family Fishing Event on Sunday, July 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lhuuke Illahee hatchery on Little Rock Creek near Logsden.

The event is sponsored by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians. It is part of ODFW’s Outdoor Education Program, which is designed to introduce youth and their families to the sport of fishing.

Sponsors will provide everything participants need to enjoy some quality fishing, including 600 stocked rainbow trout, rods and reels, tackle, bait and even flycasting gear that will be loaned out on a first-come, first served basis. Volunteer instructors will be available to show youngsters how to set up their gear, land a fish, and even clean their catch. The Longview Hills Fishing Club will also host a lure making station where kids can design and build their own fishing lures.

“This is a great opportunity to take the family fishing. All the gear is provided, and nobody should go home empty handed,” said Christine Clapp, ODFW fish biologist in Newport. “The Lhuuke Illahee hatchery is a great place for a family fishing event, and a picnic – so pack a lunch!”

Youths younger than 14 years old will not need a fishing license but those 14 to 17 will need to bring their juvenile angling license. Admission is free. There will be a catch limit of 3 fish per youth participant. All participants must be accompanied by an adult. Parking will be available as marked along the Logsden Road.

To get to the Lhuuke Illahee Hatchery from Highway 20, take Highway 229 north to Siletz and turn right (east) on Logsden Rd. The hatchery is 5 miles past the Logsden Store on the right (Milepost 13).
