Sauvie Island Hunting Dog Training Advisory Committee (DTAC)

Hot Topics

DTAC Results

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has established the Sauvie Island Hunting Dog Training Advisory Committee (DTAC), to seek collaborative solutions for how the Department can best meet the Goals and Objectives of the Sauvie Island Wildlife Area (SIWA) Draft Management Plan related to habitat and species conservation, while also meeting public desires for hunting dog training activities at SIWA.

ODFW has retained The Mary Orton Company, LLC, to provide convening and facilitation services for the DTAC. The Department is asking the DTAC to focus on aspects of the Draft Management Plan pertinent to hunting dog training and habitat issues, and not to reopen other parts of the Plan. To that end, the DTAC will focus their work on the Sauvie Island Dog Trial Plan and Individual Dog Training Plan, and the following two objectives from the Draft Management Plan:

  • Objective 3.2: Provide opportunities for individual dog training and dog field trials which will not conflict with wildlife habitat management objectives or Objective 3.1.

  • Objective 2.4: Protect, enhance and manage approximately 2,230 acres of pasture/grassland habitats to benefit wildlife species, with emphasis on ground nesting songbirds.

The DTAC meetings will be open to the public, and we will be soliciting input from people interested in this topic during an open comment period at each meeting. In addition, anyone can submit written comments at these public meetings; send emails to: odfw.comments@state.or.us (note: when sending emails to odfw.comments, please put ‘DTAC’ in the subject line); fax us at: (503) 621-3025; or by mail to: ODFW 3406 Cherry Ave NE, Salem, OR 97303. Public comments will become part of the public record, posted on this web site and included in materials submitted to the Fish and Wildlife Commission.
