Oregon Conservation Strategy

The Oregon Conservation Strategy is an overarching plan to conserve Oregon’s fish and wildlife, and their habitats. It combines the best available science and conservation priorities with recommended voluntary actions and tools for all Oregonians to define their own conservation role.

The Strategy identifies priority conservation issues:

  • Strategy Species – 294 species of greatest conservation need
  • Strategy Habitats – 11 native habitats of conservation concern
  • Conservation Opportunity Areas – 206 priority conservation areas across the state
  • Key Conservation Issues – 7 statewide threats affecting Oregon’s fish and wildlife

To learn more, go to OregonConservationStrategy.org!

Oregon Conservation StrategyThe U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service approved the 10-year revision of the Oregon Conservation Strategy in August 2016. The Oregon Conservation Strategy is now available in an interactive website at www.OregonConservationStrategy.org. Visit the new website to quickly search for specific Strategy Species and Strategy Habitats, see how they are impacted by statewide Key Conservation Issues, check if your project falls into a Conservation Opportunity Area, access the Oregon Nearshore Strategy, or create and download your own Strategy maps using the upgraded ODFW Compass mapping system. The online version is much more user friendly and compatible with how we work today.

CompassStay Connected via ODFW’s iNaturalist Project

The Oregon Wildlife Conservation iNaturalist Project was developed to collect wildlife observation data from community scientists on amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles across Oregon. This tool allows you to share your wildlife observations directly with biologists. Even if you can’t identify what species you are looking at, odds are that someone in the iNaturalist community can. Your participation will help enhance our understanding of wildlife in our state, and improve wildlife conservation efforts throughout Oregon.

In addition to great photos and sounds of Oregon’s wildlife, conservation biologists are also working to publish journal entries on iNaturalist to inform the public about various projects related to the Oregon Conservation Strategy.

Visit ODFW’s iNaturalist Journal page to read the latest.

iNaturalist is a free online tool that helps users to identify, report, and learn more about the plants and animals they observe. If you’re new to iNaturalist, you can find instructions on how to sign up and join the Oregon Wildlife Conservation project here. If you already have a iNaturalist account and need help on how to import your existing observations into our project, find detailed instructions here.
