2009 PACIFIC HALIBUT SPORT SEASONS IN OREGON

  • Statewide daily bag limit is 1 fish, no length limit; annual limit is 6 fish
  • Possession limit: 1 daily limit at sea, 3 daily limits on land
  • Remember to record your Pacific halibut on your tag immediately after catching it.
  • During days open to all-depth halibut fishing north of Humbug Mt., most species may not be taken and retained, possessed or landed when Pacific halibut are onboard the vessel except salmon (using authorized methods during authorized seasons), sablefish, Pacific cod, tuna and other Offshore Pelagic Species are allowed. During days closed to all-depth halibut fishing but open nearshore, retention of legal groundfish is allowed when a Pacific halibut is onboard the vessel.
  • It is unlawful to fish for or take and retain any species while possessing onboard any species not allowed to be taken in that area at the time.
  • Anglers are advised to consult the 2009 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations for General (statewide), Zone, and Special Regulations prior to fishing.
  • The directed commercial fishery was open June 24 and July 8 and is now closed for the remainder of 2009.
LEADBETTER PT. (WA) TO CAPE FALCON
All-Depth Seasons
Spring season. Open May 1, three days per week, Thursday-Saturday, through the earlier of 11,014 lbs. or July 18. Closed after May 29.   Summer season. Open Aug. 7, three days per week, Friday-Sunday, through the earlier of the total subarea catch limit of 15,735 lbs. or Sept. 27. After the spring season, 4,469 lbs. remained available. Open through 9/27.
CAPE FALCON TO HUMBUG MT.
Nearshore Season
Open May 1, seven days per week, inside the 40-fathom line (defined by waypoints) through the earlier of 14,407 lbs. or Oct. 31. Closed for the remainder of 2009 effective Aug. 16 at 11:59 pm because subarea quota was exceeded.
All-Depth Seasons
The Stonewall Bank YRCA (about 15 miles west of Newport and defined by waypoints) is closed to Pacific halibut fishing. Anglers on vessels possessing Pacific halibut are prohibited from fishing in the Stonewall Bank YRCA.
Spring season: Open May 14-16, May 21-23, May 28-30 and June 4-6. Then open June 18-20 and July 2-4 (backup dates). Catch limit was 124,261 lbs.  

Summer season: Closed for the remainder of 2009 after Aug. 9 because subarea quota was exceeded. Open every other Friday-Sunday (Aug. 7-9) until the total subarea all-depth catch limit of 165,681 lbs. is taken.
