Malheur Lakes Redband Trout Conservation Plan

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) is developing a conservation plan for redband trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss spp) that is consistent with guidance provided in Oregon’s Native Fish Conservation Policy. The Malheur Lakes Redband Trout Conservation Plan is intended to provide information and management guidance for redband trout within the Malheur Lakes basin. The current health of nine existing redband trout populations in this species management unit (SMU) is described, and management strategies and actions are proposed that are intended to maintain and improve their status by addressing those factors that are most limiting to the fish.

This plan has been under development for a number of years with the involvement of numerous stakeholders and partners. ODFW will present it to the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission (Commission) for final approval and adoption at the Commission’s June 7th and 8th (2018) meeting in Baker City (See for More details). In addition to being able to provide public comment at the Commission meeting, the public can provide in-person feedback about the draft plan to ODFW prior to the Commission meeting.  Two public meetings to review the Redband Plan will be held; the first on May 8, 2018 in Salem (3:30 PM; in the Steelhead Conference Room at ODFW Headquarters, 4034 Fairview Industrial Drive SE, Salem) and the second on May 9, 2018 in Burns (7:00 PM; Harney County Community Center, 478 N Broadway Ave., Burns) .  The public may also submit written comments about the draft plan by 5:00 PM on May 13th to or Attn: Redband Plan, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, 4034 Fairview Industrial Drive, Salem, OR 97302.
