ODFW delays restrictions at Redfish Rocks and Otter Rock marine reserves
July 1, 2011

Newport, Ore. – The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife announced today that it intends to delay until Jan. 1, 2012 the closure of the Redfish Rocks and Otter Rock marine reserve sites along the Oregon Coast to fishing or other taking.

The closure was scheduled to take effect on June 30, 2011.

However, according to Cristen Don with the ODFW Marine Reserve Program, the department decided to postpone implementation of the fishing closure in order to collect a second full season’s worth of baseline data -- part of its biological, social and economic monitoring efforts.

“Another year of data will help establish a more rigorous baseline on which to base our future monitoring efforts,” Don said.

The Redfish Rocks Marine Reserve and Marine Protected Area near Port Orford and the Otter Rock Marine Reserve near Newport were established in 2009 by the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission as directed by the Oregon State Legislature.
