Nearshore Pacific Halibut reopens on central coast Sept. 24

September 20, 2012

NEWPORT, Ore. – Oregon sport anglers on the central coast will get another shot at Pacific halibut when the season reopens Monday, Sept. 24.

“Halibut fisheries are coming to a close and there are approximately 4,700 pounds available,” said Lynn Mattes, sport halibut project leader for ODFW. “While this is not enough quota to re-open one day in the all-depth fishery, it is enough to re-open the nearshore fishery and provide some additional opportunity for our fishing public.”

The Pacific halibut nearshore fishery for the central coast (from Cape Falcon south to Humbug Mountain) is open every day until the remaining quota is taken or Oct. 31, whichever comes first. Anglers must stay within the 40-fathom line as defined by waypoints.

The Columbia River area and the area south of Humbug Mountain are also open to halibut fishing.

Columbia River fishery (from Leadbetter Point, Wash., to Cape Falcon, Ore.) is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Aug. 3 to Sept. 30 or until the combined spring and summer quota of 11,985 pounds is harvested, whichever comes first.

South of Humbug Mountain, the season is open seven days a week through Oct. 31.
