Stott Mt. Elk Stott Mountain

Stott Mountain Elk

My hunt got off to a late start. We had to wait for access to the area we planned to hunt due to fire danger. When the woods did open, it was for walk-in only. So we loaded up our mountain bikes and went to check our trail cameras we had placed out prior to the woods being closed. The bull I was hoping to find was not in the area but a different bull, a bull we named “Big Red,” showed up on one of our trail cameras and was now with the cows. We spotted Big Red that evening about a mile from our camera. I passed on him that evening with hopes of still turning up the bull I had set out to hunt. That next morning we pushed our bikes up to the top of the mountain to glass as much area as possible, but with no luck on spotting any elk our focus went back to Big Red. We found Big Red not far from the area where we first saw him. My husband and I were able to crawl our way to a perfect spot to take this bull. I had him at 257 yards straight across from our spot. Big Red was relaxed and just feeding up an old grassy road with his cows spread out above and below him. He was the only elk feeding on the old road. It was perfect! I dialed my scope to the yardage then settled into my rest and after two well placed shots from my 7mm 08, the bull was down. I could not believe it when I walked up on him, I was ecstatic; I just took a beautiful bull! I would have to say this has been the best hunt that I have been on so far. I would like to thank ODFW for offering such a quality hunt also Weyerhaeuser for allowing access to their land. I would also like to thank my husband Teddy and our son Jason along with friends Michael and Tim for all their hard work in helping me with scouting and packing out my bull elk.
