Hunters can access 33,000 new acres of private land in eastern Oregon

SALEM, Ore. — ODFW’s Access and Habitat Program has made cooperative agreements with six landowners to open another 33,233 acres of private lands in eastern Oregon to public hunting access.

Hunting opportunities available include deer, elk, pronghorn, upland game birds, and predators on private land in Baker, Grant, Harney, Morrow and Wheeler and Harney counties. The public access period varies by property. Additional information and the location of the properties can be found at OregonHuntingMap.com  

Daly Ranch Access Area (Columbia Basin Unit, Morrow County)

  • 3,500 acres on By-Permission reservation basis
  • Open Oct. 1-Dec. 31, 2011
  • Hunt for mule deer, pheasant, chukar, gray partridge, valley quail, and predators
  • Part of the Columbia Basin Open Fields Program
  • Call Travis Schultz, ODFW Heppner Field Office, (541) 224-3182 to arrange permission to hunt this property

Dutch Flat Ranch Access Area (Fossil Unit, Wheeler County)

  • 9,246 acres for up to four parties per day on a By-Permission reservation basis
  • Open now through Jan. 31, 2012
  • Also opens 2,500 acres of public lands previously landlocked by private property
  • Hunt for mule deer, elk, pronghorn, wild turkey, chukar, pheasant, mountain quail, and predators

Fox Valley Access Area (Northside Unit, Grant County)

  • 1,355 acres on a Welcome to Hunt basis (no other permission needed)
  • Open Aug. 1-Jan. 31 from 2011 to 2014
  • Hunt for mule deer, elk, pronghorn, wild turkey, upland game birds, and predators

Iron Mountain Access Area (Lookout Mtn Unit, Baker County)

  • 3,342 acres on a Welcome to Hunt basis (no other permission needed)
  • Access to another 4,215 acres of previously inaccessible public land landlocked by private lands
  • Hunt for mule deer, elk, pronghorn, upland game birds, and predators
  • Open from Aug. 1-Jan. 31 from 2011 to 2015

M.R. King Ranches (Lookout Mtn and Sumpter Units, Baker County)

  • 3,835 acres on a Welcome to Hunt basis (no other permission needed) in units where access to public lands can be difficult
  • Open Aug. 1-Jan. 31 from 2011 to 2013
  • Hunt for mule deer, elk, pronghorn, bighorn sheep, bear, upland birds, and predators

Pine Creek Ranch (Malheur River Unit, Harney County)

  • 12,105 acres on a Welcome to Hunt basis (no other permission needed)
  • Open Aug. 1-March 1 from 2011 to 2015
  • Hunt for mule deer, elk, pronghorn, predators, sage grouse and other upland game birds

The Access and Habitat Program is funded primarily by a $4 surcharge on hunting licenses and by deer and elk auction proceeds.  Funds raised by the program are distributed through grants to individual and corporate landowners, conservation organizations, and others for cooperative wildlife habitat improvement and hunter access projects throughout the state.
