Lower Columbia River closes to salmon, steelhead fishing Feb. 25

CLACKAMAS, Ore. – The mainstem Columbia River from Buoy 10 upstream to the I-5 Bridge will be closed to salmon and steelhead fishing as of 12:01 a.m. Monday, Feb. 25.

This area will remain open to fishing for other species including sturgeon.

Salmon and steelhead fishing will reopen Monday, March 24 between Buoy 10 and the Hayden Island powerlines west towers (approximately three miles west of the I-5 Bridge) and run through Friday, April 4. The daily bag limit will be two adult adipose fin-clipped salmon or steelhead (chinook ≥ 24” and steelhead ≥ 20”) only one of which may be a chinook.

Other 2008 Columbia River salmon and steelhead sport fishing regulations are as follows:

I-5 Bridge to Bonneville Dam:

  • Jan. 1 - March 15, open to adipose fin-clipped steelhead; closed to chinook salmon.
  • March 16 - April 30, lower boundary moves three miles downstream from the I-5 Bridge to the Hayden Island powerlines (west towers). Open to angling for adipose fin-clipped steelhead and adipose fin-clipped chinook salmon except on Tuesdays between March 25 and April 30, when the area is closed to all sport fishing (both catch-and-release and retention). 
  • Daily bag limit is two adult salmon or steelhead, only one of which may be a chinook.

Bonneville Dam to the Oregon/Washington border

  • Jan. 1 – March 15, open for adipose fin-clipped steelhead; closed for chinook salmon.
  • March 16 – May 10, open for adipose fin-clipped chinook and adipose fin-clipped steelhead from Tower Island powerlines upstream to McNary Dam and along Oregon and Washington banks only between Bonneville Dam and Tower Island. Boat angling between Bonneville Dam and Tower Island powerlines is prohibited.
  • Daily bag limit is two adult salmon or steelhead.
