Three Columbia County landowners receive grants to improve big game habitat, decrease crop damage, provide hunter access
November 20, 2009

VERNONIA, Ore. — Columbia County landowners Larry Oblack, Stephen Ellis and Leonard Schmidlin have been awarded a total of $32,840 in grants from  ODFW’s Access and Habitat Program to improve the quality and quantity of big game forage on their properties while making up for big game damage to their hay crops.

Herds of Roosevelt elk and black-tailed deer use pastures on all three properties during the winter, causing damage to hay crops. The landowners will use the grant funds to help pay for the cost of fertilizing 449 acres of pasture in the spring and fall to increase crop growth. This will alleviate the crop damage caused by deer and elk while providing them with additional forage. It will also serve as a diversionary crop to help keep the animals away from pastures and tree farms on adjacent properties. The pastures will be fertilized beginning in fall 2009 and ending in spring 2012.

In return for the grants, each landowner will allow public hunting on a total of 786 acres on a by-permission basis. The landowners will also purchase 50 percent of the fertilizer required and cover all fertilizer application costs.

The A&H Program has been supporting this hunter access and wildlife habitat project since 2003.

The Access and Habitat Program is funded by a $2 surcharge on hunting licenses. Funds raised by the program are distributed through grants to individual and corporate landowners, conservation organizations and others for cooperative wildlife habitat improvement and hunter access projects throughout the state.
