ODFW hosts angling instructor training in Salem

SALEM, Ore. -- The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will hold an Angler and Aquatic Education Instructor training on Saturday, April 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Headquarters at 3406 Cherry Ave. NE in Salem.

This free training is open to anyone 18 years or older interested in becoming a volunteer angling instructor.

“Our volunteer instructors are an important resource for today’s young people. They hold after-school fishing clubs, offer summer enrichment classes and host local fishing events,” said Darlene Sprecher, ODFW angling education program assistant. “Many also volunteer at ODFW-sponsored youth angling and Free Fishing Weekend events.”

Saturday’s training will introduce participants to the program curriculum, which includes basic fishing skills, stewardship, aquatic resources and water safety. They also will get a primer on teaching techniques and creating lesson plans.

In addition to training and curriculum, equipment and other supplies are available for loan to instructors, as is help in planning and organizing fishing events.

“We encourage anyone who wants to share their love of fishing with young people and their families to become a volunteer angler education instructor,” said Shahab Farzanegan, ODFW Aquatic and Angling Education Program coordinator. Youth leaders, classroom teachers and fishing club members are encouraged to participate.

Pre-registration for Saturday’s training is required by Wednesday, April 21. Lunch will be provided. To register, and for more information, contact Darlene Sprecher at (503) 947-6025 or e-mail Darlene.m.sprecher@state.or.us.
