Steelhead Fishing Opens on Section of Big Sheep Creek

January 5, 2010

ENTERPRISE – Steelhead anglers have a new area to fish in the Imnaha River basin beginning January 1, 2010.  The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife announced that Big Sheep Creek from the Imnaha River upstream to the mouth of Little Sheep Creek is now open for steelhead angling.

The new fishery area is approximately three miles in length and includes approximately two miles of public access on land recently acquired by The Nature Conservancy. Public access is adjacent to the Imnaha highway extending upstream from just above Camp Creek to approximately ¼ mile below Little Sheep Creek. Anglers are reminded to ask permission for access before entering onto other private land in the area.

“We are experiencing a record steelhead run in the Imnaha and Grand Ronde rivers this year”, said Bill Knox, ODFW fish biologist in Enterprise. “We encourage anglers to keep adipose fin-clipped steelhead to help reduce the potential interactions with ESA-listed wild steelhead in these waters.  Retention of adipose fin-clipped hatchery steelhead will also help reduce surplus returns to hatchery trapping facilities this spring.”

The same regulations, bag limits and season dates as the Imnaha River are in effect with the current daily bag limit of 5 adipose fin-clipped hatchery steelhead. Anglers are required to record steelhead on their combined angling tags and follow all other regulations contained in the Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations.
