Canby Pond youth fishing event cancelled

October 19, 2010

CLACKAMAS, Ore. — A youth fishing event scheduled for Saturday, October 23 at Canby Pond has been cancelled in response to the presence of thick aquatic vegetation.

The one-acre pond is located by the City of Canby and is located in Canby Community Park.

“Unfortunately there is just too much aquatic vegetation in the pond for a successful youth fishing event,” said Todd Alsbury, fish biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s North Willamette Watershed District.

Alsbury noted that thick aquatic vegetation at the popular fishing hole has been an ongoing challenge. This condition makes retrieving spin casting effectively very difficult, especially for youngsters.

The event would have been the last of 33 youth fishing events across the state hosted this year by ODFW.

“This is getting to be a very popular site and we will be working with the City of Canby to resolve this problem in the future,” said Alsbury.

ODFW had planned to release 600 legal-sized and larger rainbow trout at Canby Pond for the youth fishing event. Those fish will be redirected to other Willamette Valley water bodies, and Canby Pond will be stocked as soon as conditions improve.
