Changes to NW Goose Permit Zone hunting: Two more hunt days per week this year

October 29, 2010

SALEM, Ore.—Goose hunters in the Northwest Oregon Permit Zone will see some changes to hunting regulations this year when the season opens Saturday, Oct. 30.

  • Check stations will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. instead of 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. as in previous years.
  • Hunting hours will end at 3 p.m. not 4 p.m. Beginning shooting times are the same as previous years.
  • All hunt areas but Tillamook County are now open Saturday-Wednesday during the open periods listed in the regulations, giving hunters an extra two days to hunt each week.  When Tillamook County opens to hunting on Dec. 4, hunters will be able to hunt Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday, giving Tillamook County hunters an additional day of goose hunting each week
  • Sauvie Island Wildlife Area is now closed to goose hunting during the NW Oregon permit season.
  • Note the location of the Clatsop County check station is incorrect in the regulations. The check station will be at 92707 Svenson Market Rd, Astoria (the Svenson Junction Country Store) not at Hunts Market of Hwy 30 in Svenson. (The new location is kiddy-corner across the street from Hunts Market.)

All hunters are reminded to call 1-800-708-1782 prior to goose hunting to be certain the hunt area they plan to hunt has not reached its dusky goose quota and is still open. Hunters may also check for closure updates at https://www.dfw.state.or.us/resources/hunting/waterfowl/

See pages 18-20 of the Oregon Game Bird Regulations for more information. New regulations and information are in red text.

Because several sensitive Canada goose subspecies winter in northwest Oregon, hunters are required to pass an identification test before being permitted to hunt geese in the area (the NW Oregon Permit Zone and the NW Oregon General Zone). NW Oregon Permit Zone hunters must also record harvest in the field and bring any harvested geese to a check station so wildlife biologists can track any accidental harvest of the wrong geese.

The NW Oregon Permit Zone is Benton, Clatsop, Tillamook, Columbia, Washington, Yamhill and Polk counties. It also includes portions of Multnomah, Clackamas, Marion, Linn and Lane counties. The NW General Zone is the rest of Multnomah, Clackamas, Marion, Linn and Lane counties plus Lincoln County. See page 17 of the Oregon Game Bird Regulations for more information.
