An earlier news release incorrectly stated that harvest restrictions in the Redfish Rocks and Otter Rock marine reserves would take effect June 30, 2010. The correct date is June 30, 2011. A corrected version of the release follows.

ODFW extends comment period on potential marine reserves

September 14, 2010

NEWPORT, Ore. – The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife announced today it is extending the public comment period on various scenarios for marine reserves until Sept. 26, 2010.

The agency is soliciting public input on the different scenarios that have been crafted for three proposed marine reserves at Cape Falcon, Cascade Head and Cape Perpetua. The options describe different boundaries and levels of protection for each of three sites. The public can see the different scenarios and send comments to the community teams at reserves or to, 2040 SE Marine Science Drive Newport, OR97365, Attn:Cristen Don.

According to Cristen Don, marine reserves staff for ODFW, the public will be able to comment on the specific scenarios until Sept. 26. However, she adds, the community teams evaluating each site will continue to accept public input until the end of October, when they hope to make their final recommendations to ODFW.

Currently there are two marine reserves off the Oregon Coast at Redfish Rocks near Port Orford and Otter Rock near Depoe Bay. The sites were designated as marine reserves by the 2009 Legislature, Fish and Wildlife Commission and partnering agencies earlier this year. Harvest prohibitions will take effect June 30, 2011. In addition, a community team led by the Port of Coos Bay is working to develop a potential marine reserve proposal for the Cape Arago/Seven Devils area near Coos Bay.
