Recreational sturgeon fishery extended in lower Columbia; reopened in Bonneville Pool for two three-day periods

June 24, 2011

CLACKAMAS, Ore. – Fishery managers yesterday extended the recreational sturgeon fishery in the lower Columbia River and reopened recreational sturgeon fishing in the Bonneville Pool during a joint state hearing of the Oregon and Washington departments of fish and wildlife.

The white sturgeon season from Buoy 10 at the mouth of the Columbia to the Wauna powerlines at River Mile 40 was extended to continue seven days a week from June 27 through July 31. Previously, the season had been scheduled to close after June 26 and reopen for several days around the 4th of July weekend.

“Catch rates in the fishery have been running about the same as 2010, but angler effort has been about half of last year’s,” said Chris Kern, ODFW Assistant Columbia River Fisheries Manager. “As a result, we have room on the harvest guideline, and this allows us to provide some additional fishing opportunity.”

Surveys showed that catch rates had begun to increase in the days leading up to the meeting.

The states will continue to monitor catch in this fishery, provide weekly catch updates and will hold a check-in meeting on July 13 to review catches and ensure that the fishery can continue through July as scheduled while remaining within the harvest guideline.

Additionally, the states agreed to reopen Bonneville Pool, the portion of the Columbia River between Bonneville and The Dalles dams, to retention of sturgeon for two three-day periods. The first will occur on June 30, July 1 and July 2, and the second from July 7-9. Following the July 9 date, the reservoir will again close to sturgeon retention for the remainder of the year. This reopening was possible because about 400 fish remain on the Bonneville Pool guideline from the winter fishing season.
