Project Proponent: City of Eugene
Year Acquired: 2020
Conservation Values Protected: Black Oak Bottom will protect mature California black oak and Oregon white oak, scattered Ponderosa pine, and patches of Pacific madrone habitat. Opportunities exist to significantly restore or enhance the acreage of these habitats. Oregon conservation strategy species that reside on this property include: acorn woodpecker, willow flycatcher, chipping sparrow, and western grey squirrel. The pattern of the oak habitat is very natural across this property, with openings scattered among denser patches of oaks, and, the entirety of the site is on a south-facing slope, providing a warm and sunny aspect for the oaks. With the addition of this property, a habitat block of nearly 300 contiguous acres will be protected. Black Oak Bottom is less than one mile east of Hendricks Park, another City of Eugene park of 99 acres, and approximately one mile north of a 1,200-acre section of the City's Ridgeline Park System, which stretches east to west via several individual parks. The headwaters of Russel Creek are located within the Black Oak Bottom property. Russel Creek flows to the Willamette River, and coastal cutthroat trout have been documented in Russel Creek.
