Conservation Values Protected: This property protects part of a remnant side channel of the Willamette River called Harkens Lake. Harkens Lake and contains water year round. The location of this property is important for non-structural storage of flood water and for wetland habitats, and the property provides conservation values such as critical connectivity to Harkens Lake, which provides cold water refugia and critical life history functions for listed or species of conservation concern. These may include Chinook salmon, (Oncorhnychus tshawytscha), cutthroat trout (Oncorhnychus clarki), Oregon chub (Oregonichthys crameri), Pacific lamprey (Lampetra tridentata), western pond turtle (Actinemys marmorata), and red legged frog (Rana aurora).
The property is located within the Willamette River Floodplain Conservation Opportunity Area as identified in the Oregon Conservation Strategy (2006). This area is also within an area encompassing approximately 700 acres of private and public conservation lands between Harkens Lake and the Willamette River. These lands include approximately 2 river miles of the mainstem Willamette River.
This property also protects the scenic values of wetland habitats. Other ecosystem attributes and services, provided by this property include but are not limited to the fish and wildlife habitats described above: biodiversity, clean air and water, storage of flood water, maintenance of soil productivity, and carbon sequestration.
