Lower Columbia River White Sturgeon Conservation Plan

The plan will address requirements under Oregon’s Native Fish Conservation Policy to ensure a healthy, viable and productive white sturgeon population in the lower Columbia River downstream of Bonneville Dam for use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The plan will provide an informed, strategic approach to maintaining and rebuilding this population based on science, supported by stakeholders, built on existing monitoring efforts and new proposed actions to address information needs on critical population constraints and uncertainties, and to ensure a healthy and growing white sturgeon population into the foreseeable future. The plan is linked to an adaptive management framework that will allow it to evolve over time to respond to new available information, including the periodic assessments of the proposed actions taken.

The focus of this plan is the white sturgeon population segment within the Oregon Species Management Unit (SMU) that inhabits the main-stem lower Columbia River downstream of Bonneville Dam. In addition, the plan will give consideration to fish inhabiting the lower Willamette River and Oregon coastal rivers, bays and estuaries In the future, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife plans to prepare separate conservation plans for the remaining SMU population segments that inhabit the Columbia and Snake rivers upstream from Bonneville Dam.
