Conservation Values Protected: This property protects an oxbow of the Willamette River that contains Horseshoe Lake, which holds water year-round, and is in the 100-year floodplain. The property also lies within the Willamette River Conservation Opportunity Area as identified in the Oregon Conservation Strategy (ODFW 2006). Horseshoe Lake has important conservation value for non-structural storage of floodwater, wetland and riparian habitats and extensive bottomland hardwood forests. The bottomland hardwood forests are relatively dense and are comprised of native species including, but not limited to, black cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa), Oregon ash (Fraxinus latifolia), Pacific ninebark (Physocarpus capita/us), and red osier dogwood (Cornus sericea). The side channel and wetland areas provide cold water refugia and critical life history functions for listed or species of conservation concern, that may include Chinook salmon, (Oncorhnychus tshawytscha), cutthroat trout (Oncorhnychus clarki), Oregon chub (Oregonichthys crameri), Pacific lamprey (Lampetra tridentata), western pond turtle (Actinemys marmorata), and redlegged frog (Rana aurora).
