2019-20 commercial crab fishing season opening weekly updates

In accordance with the Tri-State protocol (pdf) pre-season testing in Oregon will begin in early November. Meat recovery and biotoxin results from the test fishery will be used as a basis for deciding the crab season opening date(s). In partnership with the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission and the commercial Dungeness crab industry, ODFW collects and tests crab out of the six major crabbing ports in Oregon. Weekly testing updates, along with information about season opening status will be posted below. Weekly updates will be provided until the decision to open the season is made.

Update

12/20 - Friday

Based on all of the preseason test results, and in consultation with ODA and California and Washington fishery managers, we are opening the ocean commercial Dungeness crab season coastwide (OR/WA border to the OR/CA border), as follows:

73 hr presoak begins (setting gear): December 28, 8:00AM
Hold Inspections: December 30, see schedule in industry notice above
Start date (pulling gear): December 31, 9:00AM

See industry notice linked above for more information.

12/18 - Wednesday

The third round of Oregon preseason testing for meat quality was conducted Sun-Mon of this week. Meat recovery results for the Tri-State area are posted above.

Crab were collected for domoic acid testing from areas A and G-L during round 3 and we anticipate those results being available Thurs or Fri.

We plan to discuss all of the results with Tri-State managers for season opening structure decision making on Friday (12/20).

12/12 - Thursday

Round 3 of testing is scheduled to begin this weekend, weather permitting.  This round will include crab quality testing in the areas that did not meet recovery criteria in round 2 and domoic acid testing in all areas south of Heceta Head. We plan to meet with ODCAC advisors and Tri-State managers at the end of next week to discuss round 3 results and season opening structure.

12/6 – Friday

Due to low meat recovery rates in half of Oregon’s harvest areas, as well as areas in both California and Washington, the opening of the ocean commercial Dungeness crab fishery is delayed at least through Dec 30th. See industry notice posted above for more details. The third round of testing is scheduled to begin the week of Dec. 15th and will include crab quality testing in the areas that did not meet recovery criteria and domoic acid testing in all areas south of Heceta Head. We plan to meet with ODCAC advisors and Tri-State managers at the end of the week of 12/15, to discuss round 3 results and season opening structure.

12/4 - Wednesday

The second round of Oregon preseason testing for meat quality coastwide was conducted Sun-Wed of this week. Meat recovery results are posted above. These will be updated with WA and CA results as they are available.

Crab were collected for domoic acid testing from areas G-L during round 2 and we anticipate those results being available Thurs or Fri.

We plan to discuss all of the Tri-State results with ODCAC advisors on Thursday (12/5) afternoon and meet with Tri-State managers for season opening structure decision making on Friday (12/6).

11/22 - Friday

Due to some concerns about weather coming up and tight logistics turnaround next week, we are delaying the 2nd round of meat quality testing a week. We are now targeting to drop gear on Nov 30, and retrieve on Dec 1. Crab will be collected for domoic acid testing from all areas G-L during round 2. We hope to have all meat quality and domoic acid results for a Tri-State call planned for Friday December 6.

11/13 - Wednesday

Due to low meat recovery rates in all of Oregon’s harvest areas, as well as in California and Washington, in consultation with Tri-State managers, the opening of the ocean commercial Dungeness crab fishery is delayed at least through Dec 15th. See industry notice posted above for more details. The second round of testing is scheduled to begin the week of Nov. 24th.

11/7 - Thursday

The first full round of preseason testing for meat quality and domoic acid coastwide was conducted Mon-Wed of this week. Meat recovery results are posted above.

The domoic acid results will be posted on ODA’s website as they become available at https://www.oregon.gov/ODA/programs/FoodSafety/Shellfish/Pages/CrabBiotoxinInfo.aspx.
