2021-22 Commercial Crab Fishing Season Opening Weekly Updates

In accordance with the Tri-State protocol (revised May 2020, pdf) pre-season testing in Oregon will begin in early November. Meat recovery and biotoxin results from the test fishery will be used as a basis for deciding the crab season opening date(s). In partnership with the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission and the commercial Dungeness crab industry, ODFW collects and tests crab out of the six major crabbing ports in Oregon. Weekly testing updates, along with information about season opening status will be posted below. Weekly updates will be provided until the decision to open the season is made.

Update

11/19 - Friday In consultation with the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) and California and Washington fishery managers, based on meat recovery and domoic acid results from round 1 of preseason testing, ODFW is opening the Oregon ocean commercial Dungeness crab season coastwide on December 1. The details for the opening in Oregon are as follows:

73 hr presoak begins (setting gear): November 28, 8:00AM
Hold Inspections: November 30, see schedule in
Start date (pulling gear): December 1, 9:00AM

Vessel hold inspection reminders:
Vessels must obtain a hold inspection prior to participating in the fishery for the first 30 days after opening. Each inspection certificate must be signed by the vessel operator or owner, not by a crewman.
11/17 - Wednesday Updated meat recovery results from the Tri-State area are posted on this page just above this table. All areas tested have met criteria to-date. Domoic acid results are anticipated to be available by the end of the week and will be posted on Oregon Department of Agriculture's website here. If all results are available, we plan to meet with Tri-State managers on Friday to discuss and decide on a season opening structure for the Tri-State area.
11/15 - Monday Meat recovery results from all Oregon crab harvest areas are posted on this page just above this table.

Domoic acid results are anticipated to be available by the end of the week and will be posted on Oregon Department of Agriculture’s website here.
11/12 - Friday Beginning Wednesday, volunteer preseason test boats have been getting out to collect crab for meat recovery and domoic acid from all 12 Oregon crab harvest areas. Meat recovery results from all areas are anticipated to be available Mon or Tues next week and will be posted on this page just above this table. Results from WA and CA's early round of testing are currently posted above.

Domoic acid results are anticipated to be available by the end of next week and will be posted on Oregon Department of Agriculture's website here.
11/4 - Thursday Volunteer boats are lined up coastwide to collect crab for meat recovery and domoic acid from all 12 crab harvest areas starting this upcoming weekend, weather permitting. For round 1, to ensure testing protocols are followed we have half of the crab harvest areas covered by electronically monitored boats and the other half are planned to have onboard observers for the gear retrieval trips.

Tri-State area meat recovery results will be posted on this page just above this table when they are available. All crab domoic acid results are posted on Oregon Department of Agricultures website here.

If you are interested in volunteering to participate in subsequent rounds of testing if they are needed please give Kelly Corbett (541-270-5083) a call to discuss as soon as possible.
10/18 - Monday Preseason testing update - Due to on-going concerns regarding COVID-19 we will again be prioritizing Electronically Monitored (EM) vessels to volunteer to conduct preseason test trips but are also trying to get onboard observers to cover the non-EM trips if possible. For any voluntary preseason test trips not covered by EM or an onboard observer we will be requiring vessels to have a vessel monitoring system (VMS, AIS or other) on throughout the duration of testing trips, captains will be required to sign an affidavit attesting that they followed all testing procedures, and all test crab landing will be observed by dockside samplers prior to processing.

If you are interested in volunteering to participate in this year’s testing please give Kelly Corbett (541-270-5083) a call to discuss as soon as possible.
