Fishing derby and Earth Day activities planned at Olalla Reservoir

April 17, 2012

NEWPORT, Ore. -- The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and Georgia Pacific, in cooperation with the Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers and several other local organizations and businesses, are sponsoring a day of fishing at Olalla Reservoir near Toledo, Ore. on Saturday, April 21.

The Olalla Reservoir Fishing Derby and Earth Day Event will go from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will include a stocked fish enclosure for youth and family fishing with loaner gear and volunteer instructors, both youth and adult fishing derbies, kayak tours, nature hikes and more. Prizes will be awarded in the adult and youth fishing derbies, and all events are free.

According to Christine Clapp, ODFW fish biologist in Newport, the event will offer something for just about every member of the family.

ODFW will be stocking a special area of the reservoir with rainbow trout for kids who are new to fishing. Fishing poles and bait will be provided, and angler instructors will be available to help teach children how to fish. More accomplished anglers, both kids and adults, can participate in the reservoir-wide fishing derbies, and non-anglers can enjoy kayaking, hiking and a variety of hands-on activities.

Olalla Reservoir is just northeast of Toledo, Ore. From Highway 20 follow Olalla Road north to Olalla Reservoir City Park. Parking at Olalla Reservoir is reserved for people launching boats or transporting infants in car seats.  All other participants will need to park at the Toledo High School and ride the shuttle to Olalla Reservoir.  The shuttle will be running between Toledo High School and the reservoir every 15 minutes from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Toledo High School is located at 1800 NE Sturdevant Road.  There will be signs posted to guide people to the high school from east or westbound Highway 20.
