ROSEBURG, Ore. – After several reports of anglers fin clipping wild steelhead in the Umpqua Basin, Oregon State Police are stepping up enforcement efforts.
“We’ve heard some anglers are catching wild winter steelhead, clipping the adipose fins and releasing them back to the river. This type of violation is extreme and people caught fin clipping and releasing wild steelhead can be arrested and lodged at the County Jail,” said OSP Sergeant Lynn Withers.
Anglers are also reminded it is illegal to retain a winter steelhead with a freshly clipped adipose fin. Withers asks anglers who catch these fish to release them and call OSP with the location the fish was caught at 541-440-3334. People observing anglers fin clipping wild fish are also urged to call OSP.
