Local biologist gives talk on Rogue dams and native fish

January 14, 2014

ROSEBURG, Ore. – Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist Dan Van Dyke will discuss a history of Rogue River dams and native fish as part of Oregon Wildlife’s new Medford lecture series. The talk begins at 6:30 p.m. on January 28 at the Mace Watchable Wildlife Memorial Center at the Jackson County Expo, 1 Peninger Road, Central Point.

Oregon Wildlife (formerly Oregon Wildlife Heritage Foundation) hosts Discovering Wildlife Lecture Series in Portland and expanded to include Medford and Bend in 2014.

“These lectures are a great way for the public to learn about Oregon’s wildlife, resources and conservation challenges. We’re excited to bring the series to Medford and hope the public enjoys learning more about their local fish and wildlife,” said Tim Greseth, Executive Director of Oregon Wildlife.

The Medford series kicks off with Van Dyke’s talk on Rogue River dams and how these and other barriers create problems for native migratory fish. Van Dyke will update attendees on the status of Chinook salmon runs and observations of fish use in restored habitat. Combined with ongoing stewardship throughout the watershed, the projects provide a momentum for Rogue River restoration that makes this a very exciting time for people who care about the river and its fish and wildlife resources.

The lecture series continues February 25 with a talk on Rogue Valley deer migration and March 25 on Pacific fisher.

Presentations begin at 6:30 p.m. and admission is just $5 – free to Oregon Wildlife members. To register, go to Oregon Wildlife’s web site at www.owhf.org and click on Discovering Wildlife Lecture Series.
