LA GRANDE, Ore. — ODFW plans to release approximately 200 spring Chinook salmon into the Powder River to create a unique fishing opportunity. The release is tentatively scheduled for June 11 and the fishery would continue through Sept. 1.
The salmon will be released immediately below Mason Dam and the river will be open for spring Chinook fishing from the dam to Hughes Lane Bridge near Baker City. The daily bag limit will be two spring Chinook salmon.
While the release is tentatively planned for June 11, the actual release dates will depend on fish availability and trapping conditions at Hells Canyon Dam. Interested anglers should contact the ODFW Northeast Region Office at (541) 963-2138 to confirm fish release dates.
This fishing opportunity occurs because of an anticipated strong return of spring Chinook returning to Hells Canyon Dam on the Snake River. Fishery managers have determined there will be more fish returning than are needed to meet Snake River fishery allocations and hatchery broodstock needs. This allows them to transport some of the fish trapped at Hells Canyon Dam to nearby tributaries to provide unique fishing opportunities. Salmon smolts are released at Hells Canyon Dam for the express purpose of providing fisheries in the Snake River.
Much of the area open to fishing in on private land, and ODFW reminds anglers to ask for permission before entering.
