SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will host a free Family Fishing Event at Row River Nature Park in Cottage Grove on Saturday, April 5 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The event is a feature of the ODFW Outdoors Program and is designed to introduce kids and their families to fishing. Participants are welcome to bring their own fishing equipment if they prefer. For those without fishing gear, ODFW will provide rods, reels, tackle and bait on a first-come, first-served basis. The pond will be stocked with 2,000 rainbow trout, produced especially for this event by ODFW’s Willamette hatchery.
“This is a great opportunity for families to get out, spend some time togethe outdoors, and find out how much fun fishing can be,” said Shannon Richardson, ODFW biologist. “If you’ve never fished before, no problem. We’ll be available to help set up gear, teach how to cast, land and even clean the fish.”
The event is open to the public, and no pre-registration is required. Anglers 13 years old and younger do not need a fishing license. Anglers 14-17 years of age will need a juvenile fishing license, which can be purchased for $9 at any ODFW license agent, ODFW office or on-line at ODFW’s website. Grown-ups who plan to participate must have an adult fishing license. Licenses will not be sold at the event so individuals planning to participate should purchase their licenses ahead of time.
Row River Nature Park (formerly known as Cottage Grove Pond) is a 15-acre group of six ponds located 1.5 miles east of Cottage Grove on Row River Road behind the truck scales.
