HINES, Ore. – The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will host a public meeting in Ontario on Nov. 12 to outline plans to remove carp from the Beck-Kiwanis Pond in order to improve fishing.
The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Treasure Valley Community College, Weese Bldg. Rm 110, 650 College Blvd., Ontario 97914.
At the meeting, ODFW staff will describe plans to treat the pond with rotenone on Nov. 18 in order to restore the once popular community fishery. Staff also will go over the post-treatment stocking plans that include the reintroduction of bluegill and bass, and the addition of late fall, early winter trout stocking.
According to Dave Banks, ODFW fish biologist in Hines, there has been a lot of local interest in how the rotenone treatment will work.
“However, we ask that folks stay away from the pond on that day in order to let our staff focus on their work,” he said.
The department chose to treat the lake with rotenone because it is an affordable and effective way to remove unwanted fish with little threat of long-term ecological damage.
Rotenone, a plant substance, has been approved as a fish toxicant by the Environmental Protection Agency. At the concentrations used to kill fish, rotenone is not toxic to human, other mammals or birds. It breaks down completely in the environment and will not be detectable within weeks of treatment. For more information about rotenone go to the ODFW website at https://www.dfw.state.or.us/fish/diamond_lake/FAQs.asp.
