Last day to keep wild coho on Beaver Creek at Ona Beach will be Nov. 16

Nov. 12, 2014

NEWPORT, Ore. – A large coho return, excellent fishing conditions and a group of ready anglers have combined to bring early closure to a highly successful wild coho fishery on Beaver Creek near Newport.

Biologists with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife announced today that the creek will close to the retention of wild coho at midnight on Sunday, Nov. 16. That’s when they predict the harvest quota of 150 fish will have been met. The season was set to close on Nov. 30 or when the quota was reached, whichever came first.

ODFW biologist Derek Wilson said the season started off strong when it opened on Nov. 1.

“A wet October and a good tide series pushed a lot of fish into Beaver Creek just before the season opener,” he said. “Add in a group of anglers eager to fish this small but unique fishery and we knew the quota probably wouldn’t last long.”

The nearby Yaquina, Alsea and Siletz rivers remain open to wild coho through Nov. 30.
