Columbia River re-opens to catch-and-release sturgeon fishing

Monday, August 31, 2015

SALEM, Ore. – Effective Tuesday, Sept. 1, the Columbia River upstream of Bonneville Dam will re-open to catch-and-release fishing for sturgeon, Oregon and Washington fishery managers announced today.

Managers had closed that area of the river to all sturgeon fishing following the mortality of more than 80 broodstock-sized sturgeon in the Columbia River in July. According to Chris Kern, ODFW fish division deputy administrator, water temperatures have returned to normal and no significant continuing mortality has been observed, prompting managers to re-open the fishery.

Sturgeon fishing continues to be catch-and-release only with no retention allowed.
