New video series helps beginners learn to fish for trout

How to fish
From casting to cooking, guide Cody Herman shows novice anglers how to catch and prepare trout in a new video series from ODFW.

SALEM, Ore. – Just in time for summer vacations and family fishing, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has introduced a new video series titled How to fish for trout in Oregon to help newcomers learn how to fish.

The 14-part series, sponsored by ODFW and starring professional guide Cody Herman of Day One Outdoors, takes the beginning angler from picking out the proper gear at the local sporting goods store, to cleaning and cooking their catch. In between, anglers will learn easy, proven techniques for attaching tackle and bait, casting, and what to do when a fish bites.

“It’s true that catching trout can be easy, but it can also be intimidating when you’re first starting out and you don’t know what you need, how to do it, or where to go,” said Chris Willard, ODFW Recruitment and Retention Coordinator. “These videos are designed to make it easier for beginning and novice anglers to take advantage of Oregon’s most popular fishery.”

The videos are being released just as Oregonians are making their outdoor travel plans.

“Summer vacation and fishing just naturally go together,” Willard said. Whether you’re planning a week-long getaway to a remote location, or a one-day staycation close to home, there will be an opportunity to add fishing to the agenda, he said.

The new video series is part of ODFW’s on-going efforts to introduce newcomers and others to the fun of fishing.

Links to the video series, and other resources about how and where to fish in Oregon, can be found on the Learn to Fish page of the ODFW website.
