SALEM, Ore. – The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife invites Oregon families to come fishing at one of 36 free Family Fishing events scheduled throughout the state this spring and summer.

The first event for 2016 will take place Saturday, March 19 at Devil’s Lake near Lincoln City and continue almost weekly through the springtime and into the summer.

These popular events take place in some great places and are typically stocked in advance with a lot of fish. On top of that, ODFW provides loaner rods, reels, tackle and bait, along with helpful tips from experienced angling instructors.

The events are designed to show families how easy and fun fishing can be, according to Shahab Farzanegan, ODFW angler education coordinator.

“Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for a family to experience a successful fishing trip,” he said. “We hope everyone has a good time at the event and discover fishing is an activity they can enjoy for a lifetime.”

Times, dates and locations of all the Family Fishing events are listed below and posted on the ODFW website. Check back periodically, as dates/times can change.

Children ages 11 years old and younger can fish for free, while those 12 to 17 and adults will need an Oregon fishing license. The new Youth License is only $10 for 12 to 17 year olds. Licenses can be purchased at ODFW’s Online License Sales page or from any ODFW field office or retail license outlet. Licenses will not be sold at the event.

For families that can’t attend one of the scheduled events, ODFW offers several resources to help you go fishing on your own, including:

Additional free fishing opportunities will take place on June 4-5 during “Free Fishing Weekend.” That weekend ODFW will waive all fishing license fees for anglers of all ages.
