Family fishing on tap at Trojan Pond near Rainier

April 18, 2016

CLACKAMAS Ore. — Thousands of rainbow trout will be waiting for anglers who attend a family fishing event Saturday, April 23 at Trojan Pond from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Over the past two weeks, ODFW has released more than 6,000 trout into the pond located near Rainier. These releases included several hundred “larger” and “trophy” trout ranging from 13 inches to more than two pounds apiece.

“We’re putting a lot of great trout into Trojan this year so we encourage everyone to come out and join in the fun,” said Jeff Fulop, family fishing event coordinator for ODFW’s North Willamette Watershed District.

In addition to thousands of trout, ODFW will provide rods, reels and tackle and bait, on a first-come first-served basis to those who want to participate. Participants are welcome to bring their own fishing gear if they prefer but are not required to do so. Staff and volunteer fishing instructors will be on site to answer questions and demonstrate effective fishing techniques.

“We want to make this as fun and easy as possible,” said Fulop. “These events give parents an opportunity to enjoy a day of fishing with the kids.”

The event is open to the public, and no pre-registration is required. Anglers 11 years old and younger do not need a fishing license. Anglers 12-17 years of age will need a youth license, which can be purchased for $10 at any ODFW license agent, ODFW office or on-line at ODFW’s website. Everybody else must have an adult fishing license. Licenses will not be sold at the event so individuals planning to participate should obtain their licenses ahead of time.

Trojan Pond is one of more than 350 water bodies in Oregon that ODFW regularly stocks with trout. Persons interested in fishing can explore many other opportunities by perusing ODFW’s stocking schedules, maps, guides and other resources at ODFW’s website, located at www.odfw.com under the “Fishing” tab.

Trojan Pond is a 15-acre pond located approximately 4.5 miles southeast of Rainier on the north side of Hwy. 30 at the old Trojan nuclear facility site. The pond is located on the right side of the road as soon as you turn onto the Trojan Access Road.
